Native Spirit ArtWalk with B.C. Nowlin in Scottsdale
March 3, 2022 @ 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm
The Signature Gallery will feature B.C. NOWLIN and his new 2022 collection of iconic tribal paintings during the Native Spirit ArtWalk in Scottsdale.
Thursday, March 3rd, 2022
6:30 – 9 PM
Much of B.C. Nowlin’s artwork features cathedral-like forests of towering trees and leaves set ablaze in a variety of warm tones. Shifting away from the perspective of the viewer, and within this radiant space are often figures wrapped in cloaks, and while those figures in Nowlin’s paintings clearly have a tribal feel, they are not specifically meant to be Native American. Nowlin refers to them as “iconic tribal figures.” With a deep interest in history and pre-history, he points out that every human on earth has indigenous ancestry. “We’re all tribal people, far back in the reaches of our soul,” he says.
B.C. views the organic villages in his paintings in a similarly universal way. Although influenced by the architecture and building materials of the indigenous pueblos he has known all his life, as a native New Mexican himself- Nowlin alternatively calls them citadels. He imagines them as ancient, sacred cities that await the spiritual nomad, uniting the past and future in the greater circle of time. With enormous appreciation for what his life has given him, he sees himself as one of these travelers, carrying a spirit of optimism as his torch. In a recent interview with Southwest Art Magazine, he stated,
“That’s why there’s always a brilliant place up ahead in the distance, and why the figures face away… There’s something up there, and it’s bright and interesting to me.”
Meet the Artist, and enjoy an evening transported into B.C.’s realm, as we come together to experience a sense of unity, and honor Scottsdale’s rich Native culture and heritage through fine art.
